When will we start the general strike?
For a general strike to be successful, a high number of participants is crucial. Join unions and organizations, get ready, be prepared and tell others.
Why should this strike have more success than previous strikes?
global network, local impact: while workers and individuals in certain countries will go on strike, people from all over the world can support them in different ways
more focus: general strikes in countries with real political and eocnomic influence on Israel
achievable demands: our demands are clear, achievable and in line with international law. They can be adapted according to the political situation
coordination and cooperation: by gathering already existing Humanitarian or Pro-Palestinian workers’ unions and organizations, a strong international network can be established and best practice examples and advice can be shared
early announcement and long duration: the general strike should last at least two weeks or until the demands have been met. An early announcement and a longer duration will facilitate to have more individuals join the strike
financial support and mutual aid: possibilites of donating money directly to unions, organizations and individuals on strike. Possibility of connecting locally for mutual aid during the general strike
Information and advice: while we cannot provide individual legal support and advice, there are link to relevant sources available and most organizations and unions already know how to deal with legal questions
different forms of strike and support: not everyone in the target countries will be able to go on strike and stop working. Alternatives such as committing to an “Italian Strike / Work-To-Rule” and/or hunger strike or at least not buying anything during the time of the general strike can also have an impact.
non-violence: this is not new, but important to mention. We demand peace and the compliance to laws. As such, we should stick to the same principles. Furthermore, non-violent forms of protests are more likely to succeed and have a lasting effect.
tracking and amplifying participation: research has shown, that general strikes are successful, if 3,5 % of the population goes on strike and witholds their workforce. By collecting information from already existing unions and organizations with committed members and other ways of tracking participation numbers of individuals in certain countries, we can make sure to be ready to strike or at least have a considerable amount of people so that the strike will be unignorable and others can join in easily.
Why is there not one big funding campaign for all the organizations?
Having one big funding campaign is easier an more convenient, but it is also more risky and less transparent. When handling a huge amount of money, security risks and possibility of corruption is higher. Identifying, contacting and sending money to those workers who went on strike and need financial support will also be a huge administrative task.
Donating directly to unions and organizations minimizes the risks and enables the groups to act quicker and independently. Unions and organizations have direct contact to their members. They can manage the finances and make sure that those who went on strike and need financial support will receive it.
Why is my country not inlcuded?
If you think that a general strike in your country can have an influence on the Israeli government and you are willing to help organize it, contact us. This might be especially interesting for Australian, New Zealand or Israeli citizens. If general strikes are illegal in your country, we advise you not to participate, especially if you are a Palestinian citizen or a citizen in an Arab or authoritarian country.
